Our front entry has been a never ending challenge over the 25 years we have lived here.
I can't tell you how many different plantings we have tried in various containers flanking our front door.
This past Spring I scored several large healthy hydrangeas that looked amazing...
for a time.
I did my very best trying to keep them looking great, but the shifting sun exposure not only had me switching them back & forth,
but shading them with golf umbrellas every afternoon to shield them from the full force of the afternoon sun.
They finally succumbed to white powdery mildew and are recuperating and hopefully regenerating in the full shade of the backyard.
My husband and I came up with this idea over the weekend.
We have several wine barrel strap spheres and decided to try them in the planter boxes.
A trip to Home Depot yielded 2 flats of a gorgeous low growing plant that fortunately fit perfectly inside our planters.
We filled up the planters with leftover bricks and set the flats on top.
At first we were going to place them on their axis point but in the end decided to set them casually upon the living green carpet.
This way they look like knots.
So, the question is...
What do you think of our art installation?

Hello Terri:
This is a most innovative idea in order to deal with what is obviously a somewhat hostile environment for plants.
The plain borders of Box are perfect in our view for drawing in and directing the visitor purposefully to the hall door. Unfussy and uncluttered they complement the door treatment which although quite simple has the dramatic touch of the colour of the paintwork.
I adore your solution/art installation...so chic...so unpredictable. I have the same problems as you with hydrangeas and the sun and have resorted to beach umbrellas myself in the past...but now have found that if I leave the hydrangeas in their plastic nursery pot and place that inside a larger glass bowl inside the urn and leave them in standing water they do just fine as long as watered every day. If you leave town for a few days, remove them from the urns...place in a container of water and rest them in full shade. This past year I even thought I had figured out a safe place to plant them in the ground...had the gardener trim back a plumbago hedge from the house and the hedge provided almost full shade all day. Was working great until his assistant lopped off the top of the plumbago so now I have the beach umbrellas in the flower bed! Your new art planting looks so amazing I think I would just stick with it.

terri, that's the perfect solution! I suffer from the same problem at my front. it's so hard to find just the right plant. I think you've done it right! donna
I love what you did Terri it looks wonderful! I need to send this post to my neighbor who is having the same problem with her entryway. I think the dog is whimsical and looks nice where he is standing greeting people.

What a great solution! I love it...it's so different!
Brilliant solution and they look great popping agains the black of the planters!
I LOVE IT! It's so unexpected and quite the juxtaposition with your traditional facade! The dog adds a touch of whimsy! Very creative and artful solution!
What a gorgeous entrance, and I think you nailed it...simply genius!!
The dog the dog is glorious!
WOW, thanks everyone for the great confirmation!!!
I'm hoping this one is a keeper :)
Hi Terri! It's Danielle's mom, Linda. LOVE your entry! The sculptural metal "topiary" balls make for a young vibe but tie in to all the classic elements of your home inside and out! Hoping for a similar feeling in my home one day! Classic and enduring but not grandma's house. Working on having similar Versailles planters made- at that size, haven't found any under $700.00 a piece!
P.S. Finally met Chris! Made a very warm impression on hubby and I. Hope to still have him over for dinner but I hear he's quite exhausted after long hours working for my brother-in-law! :)
First...I adore your entry and while it looked stunning in hydrangeas, I think it's AMAZING with your new art installation! It seems like your entry was just waiting for your discovery! I love your black doors and shades...we just moved and I need to paint my door...This was just the motivation I needed! Must get going...
Terri, Love your entry with all it's windows and your blinds.. How pretty with the spheres too. Hydrangeas are tricky. I agree with the other reader that they do tend to do better in their plastic pots. The ones I have in terra cotta are always wilting, not so the others.
Have a good weekend!
Kim
