I spent Saturday afternoon with an artistic genius who happens to be a dear friend. His name is Ron Morgan.
He ushered me into his workshop where he took out a brush and a can of paint and showed me how to transform a rather ordinary pair of mirrors, that I had sitting in my prop shop collecting dust, with just a few simple brushstrokes.
I brought them over intending to spray them a different color, but he took one look at them and declared... "They're Fab!"
"I love the color, all they need is a bit more drama".
And just like that he dipped his brush into the paint and brushed it into the center of the rings, adding bamboo leaf detail to each one.
He handed me the brush saying...
"Now get to it!"
I have a confession to make,
I am a Virgo, a perfectionist, and I have resisted doing many things myself because I always want them to be perfect, so this was my moment of truth!
There was no way I was going to embarrass myself in front of this man who I have admired for years, so I took the brush and began to paint.
It was challenging as I felt myself trying TOO HARD to copy his example, laboring over every stroke.
He offered a few encouraging words like, let the brush do the work which helped.
After completing the first mirror he came over with a big smile on his face declaring that it was "Fabulous" and quite a transformation.
I felt slightly more confident as I set my sights on the second mirror.
Halfway through I noticed he was starting to clean up and I asked if he was ready to go. He told me to finish up and that he would busy himself with a few phone calls.
Well that was all it took for me to finally relinquish the perfectionist grip I had on the brush and effortlessly deliver my finest strokes.
It was exhilarating to stand back and look at the finished product. Of course I fixated a bit on how each stoke looked different and a bit awkward but the overall effect was amazing and I felt liberated from the ties that have held me back from creating something with my own hands.
I've always been creative in my head but have rarely allowed myself to bring those creative ideas to life.
This was big for me!
We packed the mirrors into the back of his van and he drove me home.
After he left... I brought them into our bedroom and placed them behind the lamps on our nightstands just for fun.
My original intention was to sell them.
I took a few steps back and I couldn't believe how amazing they looked! To think they had been sitting in the prop shop for at least a year, forgotten and collecting dust!
Their transformation...
My transformation...
had completely transformed our bedroom!
I think there are going to be a lot more DIY's in my future :)

Those are a great pair of mirrors. Love what you did with them. They look good in you space. Isn't it fun recreating a space? Love your wallcovering? Looks wonderful in the space.
Terri,
Sometimes it's a bit nerve wracking, (I'm the same way) to give something new a try, especially when we see how everyone else out there does such fabulous jobs on things but once we get that little added push, and we "let go" as you say it turns out amazing as did your mirrors! They are beautiful in your beautiful bedroom!
Rebecca
They're fabulous and perfect for your bedroom. Hugs, Marty
As a Virgo myself I totally get it and you did a wonderful job on the mirrors. Sometimes we virgos need to learn to let go and relax. Your bedroom is beautiful too!
Job well done! The mirrors look great. Now you have the DIY bug...its infectious.
Angela and Renee
Great job..love the mirrors and they were the crowning touch to your beautiful bedroom....wonderful job, thanks for sharing!
You did a wonderful job and I hope this encourages you to keep creating. It's hard to take those first few steps, but after that you are ready to go!
Love your bedroom. The ceiling is fabulous!
XO,
Jane
Those are gorgeous!! The whole room is gorgeous. So funny how many Virgos there are amongst us. I'm actually an Aries with a Virgo moon (and clearly from California!) so I totally get the perfectionist getting in your way! Sometimes the only thing that gets me past it is pressure! Or occasionally I'll paint with a glass of wine in hand. I think that's why I love oil painting vs. watercolor. You can always paint over it. I'm a wreck if I try to paint watercolors, vino or not! Congrats. Keep doing this!
I get the perfectionist part of your storey and I am not a Virgo but instead host an ever growing problem with OCD....its a happy creative OCD but again I understand.
The room now finished with the mirrors is truly inspirational and everywhere you look there is something interesting to capture your eye.
Great post.
you go girl!!!
Virgo here too...completely understand. These mirrors are a must for your bedroom...the perfect complement!!
Huh?...oh, yeah, the mirrors.....I was too distracted looking at all that great coral collection in the cabinet! Ok, mirrors...your friend is a good one, he knew exactly what they needed and understood the importance of detail. So glad (Virgo) you were able to loosen up a little and let it "just happen". I love them! (and your chandelier)
What a cool post! Thank you for sharing a bit more about yourself. It's interesting how via this medium of communicating people either sound very unlike themselves, or very honestly. I felt you were talking to me directly and as a friend. And "true friends are those with whom you can think out loud"
Tri
dear "miss virgo"
your perfectionism did appear along with your creativity, your mirrors are brilliantly perfect! keep those mirrors if you can terri, you can only go up and they will remind you of how far you have come

hee hee I never knew what DIY meant but it must mean Do It Yourself! Your bedroom is awesome. You are awesome and "have the gift" with a paintbrush or not! I don't think I ever noticed your fab ceiling or that gorgeous chandelier! U did a great job and I think they should stay in your room! I'm seeing them side by side next to your curio cabinet or on the wall above the lamps as they are! xoxo
I just found a book, Period Finishes and Effects by Judith and Martin Miller at my thrift store for $2. Published by Rizzoli. It has the bamboo technique in there, also ageing metal, tortoise shell techniques, weathered lead looks. You should look for it. I think your nice mirrors are hidden by the lamps. Now if we could just get you onto Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I think you would like that. It is really easy to do. Ann
LOVE those mirrors! If you ever decide to get rid of them I'm right around the corner from you.

Your friend was right...FABULOUS. I can totally relate about not wanting to wreck something with paint. I did a similar embellishment to my dining room chandelier...speaking of which, I LOVE your bedroom chandelier...and your entire bedroom including the grasscloth.
Keep the mirrors! You did a fantastic job and they look fabulous in your beautiful bedroom.
I love your linens and the grasscloth walls. Exquisite room.
I can't wait to see what your next DIY project will be. XO
WOW
Thank you everyone for your understanding and encouragement.
I can always count on your love and support and it means the world to me.
It's so comforting especially to hear from fellow Virgos, it's amazing how much we relate to each other.
Thank you also for all the lovely compliments on our bedroom!!
You guys are the BEST!!!
I had no doubt in your abilities! They look amazing and how perfect above your bedside tables! Gorgeous!
Megan
