Great Adaptations

I love these "second acts" out of household basics that I found in this month's Martha Stewart Living.

bookcases + door = home office
It's no secret that doors make great desktops. They're inexpensive, roomy and readily available in a variety of sizes.  But what about the rest of the desk? Sawhorses are great, but they don't offer the storage low-rise bookcases do.  Thirty-inch square bookcases are the ideal height for a desk and are the same width as a standard-size door. Prime and paint the bookcases, and top with a door finished in the same color. If space is tight (and you can't find a ready-made door in your desired length), custom-order the size you need at a home-supply store. To give the desk a finished, cohesive look, add a few details: Line the back of the shelves with sheets of marbled paper (secured with double-sided tape), and hot glue a ribbon around the edge of the desktop and leather cord across the shelves.

 Check this one out!

picture rails = shoe rack
Some of your heels are works of art, so why not display them as such? Line the walls of a walk-in closet or a dressing area with picture-rail molding to make a tidy yet visually arresting display. Buy preprimed pieces, and have them cut to length at the store. Paint before installing, either the color of the wall or a bold accent shade. Space the rails a foot apart, and attach them to the wall with construction adhesive. Hammer finishing nails every 18 inches (you don't have to hit studs), countersink nails, spackle, and touch up with paint.

Anyone up for a summer project?

New treasure just listed at

Nothing planned, but I am working on hubby to do a few things. You know me I am the point girl. I just point to where and how I want things. I am so bad!!!! Kathysue

I love the shoe rack...what a wonderful way to pick the right shoes for every outfit by having them at eye level!!

We have a lot of outdoor painting projects going on, the shutters, the porch railings and the shed. Thankfully we hired someone!! ;-D

Hello Terri my dear! I saved both ideas to my desktop; I think they would be so useful & you never know when you may need to build a desk or hang your lovely shoes.

I loved your comment to me yesterday. You always know how to cheer me up. What I'd LOVE is selling this house and for Miss Emily and I to take a road trip to get her back to college only to make a fabulous stop in California to meet you and gorgeous son at last. If we were really lucky, we'd have the great opportunity to meet your terrific mother as well! Em's going back to WA in late July, so there's almost time. Sell house..sell! I hope you are having a great start to summer. I adore you and thanks for making me smile. Big hug to you.

xx Deb
