Painted Doormat

A few months ago I was inspired by this photo of a painted gray & white striped doormat.

Last weekend, I showed it to my husband and we discussed the idea of painting one in our front entry.

At first we considered wide black & white stripes like the inspiration photo.

But the more we brainstormed we came up with the idea of painting a 36" X 48"  black rectangle  with a classic off-white clam shell in the middle.

This is the best mock up we could come up with but I think it gives you a pretty good idea.

I'd love to know your thoughts...

Since I love clam shells, and have them all over my house in various forms... and functions....I am partial. BUt with that - I would say YES - go for the black with the white clamshell. I think it will look terrific.

Therese... what a fabulous idea! I really like stripes but the clam shell is a great alternative too! Hard decision but good luck!

I prefer the clamshell Terri - beautifully hand-painted by you...

I can't tell you my relief that Pottery Barn have turned to an autumn theme - I really was uncomfortable seeing things we otherwise accumulate naturally in the course of our lives, like shells, branches, pebbles even - on sale! MAKING a home is the skill, not just buying things.

Hmmm I recall the inspiration photo post. Like the shell maybe one large in the center and a smaller one on each side if you want a larger looking design. Anyway you do it, it's sure to have that cool factor.

I think the stripes are very modern and unexpected. I do say you have the perfect doorway for something like this and the clam shell does go with your decorating. I think it would look very nice. Stripes would be cool but the clam shell would be personal and if the clam shell makes you happy to look at....then clam shell it should be.

Ooooh! Fun idea, If it were me a given the stripes but you my two legged mermaid must have a shell!!!! Great idea, can't wait to see the finished product. Kathysue

Therese..they are both fantastic ideas..I love the boldness of the black and white strip..but the clam shell is lovely and very unique..especially if there is a story behind it. Either one will look super. I would be adventurous and go a little bit bigger with the clam shell...it will look fantastic after the design has been worn a little. Cant wait to see how it all turns out...Good luck lovely x

Therese,
I am really torn...I lean towards the stripes making a bold statement. Really think it would be unique! The clam shell is a great idea, yet I go along with "Rita @ beach House Living" with a center one and smalls on each side it will monogram it in sorts :)

The strips very French European, without saying trendy French. The siding and the door will work great with both.

Therese, I guess you will have to surpirse us :)

You love shells, so go for the seashell!

What drew you to the picture was the unexpected surprise of modern stripes in a very traditional setting. I would opt for the stripes. You have shells all over your house already. Plus the roundness of the clam shell with the little round flower thing at the right under the house number seems fussy. I have a tendency to "Talbotsize" a lot of things so I have to be careful not to overdo. Remember what Coco Chanel said. Look in the mirror at your outfit, then take one accessory off. Simplify. Then, when you open the door and see the Chinese fireplace -- wow! Ann

Its perfect for you! Where are your silver sphere things for your planters, I love those! You need to put them back!

My thoughts are, I LOVE anything you do ;)

Thanks for the encouragement- the hardest thing to remember is that only YOU control your emotions or reactions. We've been through so much in the last 2 years with the economy, it just seems silly to be upset about a missing stereo and back seats ;)

A great idea. Will you use concrete paint or stain? I have stained concrete to look like slabs of stone in two areas on two different types of concrete. One has worn well and the other not. Make sure you use a top coat sealer to protect your design from foot traffic and re coat occasionally.

Oh yes!...love,love, love the clam shell motif. If you still want some stripes, how about doing a striped border around it. Can't wait to see it finished.

I vote for the clam - unique and seems like your style (from what I see here). I would make it bigger, it's too fantastic not to!

hands down it's the cutest clam shell I've ever seen!!!

of course you would come up with this great idea! i say go for it. the best thing about paint, is that of course if you don't like it you can paint it back! or paint it with chalkboard paint and you can change the design and message! if you have friends coming over, you can write a personal message with chalk for them! how cool would that be? ok, if you DO do that, show me..... i would love to see it.

For you...it must be a clamshell!!! Wonderful idea and I can't wait to see it finished.
